History of Janmashtami

Janmashtami is celebrated to celebrate the birth of the Lord Krishna. It is said that, on a wild and stormy night, lord Krishna was born. According to legends and Vedas, Lord Krishna is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Human form and he did so in order to eliminate the evilness that was prevailing in the world. So, around 5200 years back in Mathura, Lord Krishna was born in Jail.

It is said that, Kansa (Brother of lord Krishna mother) had heard a predication that Devaki, would conceive a son, who will kill Kansa. That is why he killed 7 babies of Devaki, every time she gives birth. Lord Krishna was the 8th one and his father Vasudev, carried lord Krishna to Gokul after facing tremendous difficulties.

So Janmashtami is celebrated as the day of birth of super power, as the day of birth of Lord Krishna.

This year, Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on 28th August 2013.

In 2014, Janmashtami will be celebrated on August 17th, 2014.

How People Celebrate Krishna Janmashtami?

Well, followers of Hindu culture, usually celebrates this festival. On this day, people in order to show their devotion and faith towards god, do not eat food and keep fast for the whole day. Only after the birth of Lord Krishna at 12 clock in the night, people break their fast, after paying their prayers to lord Krishna.

It is a day of celebrations and joy and various types of events that are culture in nature and dedicated to lord Krishna are celebrated. People indulge themselves into various types of activities that are related to lord Krishna. In various religious organizations, special programs like Bhagavad gita are recited and its message is spreaded among the people.

A person tends to visit houses of their relatives to celebrate this festival all together. On the other hand, for children it is a day of fun as they get to eat lots of varieties of food, prepared to end the fast. It is a gazette holiday and all public and private offices are closed on this day.
